Peek the Process: Mrs. Fields Candy Wrapper Package
Behind-the-Scenes | Mrs. Fields
Mrs. Fields winter packages! So festive and fun. This behind-the-scenes post is about a new box design in the shape of a twisty, candy wrapper that is the first of its kind to be featured on the Mrs. Fields website. Below is a very poorly exposed photo of some quick sketches I drew, coming up with ideas for the candy wrapper box. Prior to beginning this design, I had researched holiday sweater patterns as inspiration for a few of the other packages I created, and since Fields was open to suggestions as to what the candy wrapper could look like, I decided to explore the patterns idea a bit further. See if you can decode my handwriting!
When I was told I’d be designing for this new candy wrapper box, I asked for a dieline to see what the dimensions were, and the box, up until that point, was but a concept in the art director’s mind, so her in-house team hadn’t yet created a dieline. I still had a deadline to present design options by, so I went ahead and created some arbitrary measurements and sent them a few concepts, showing what one side of the box would look like. You’ll see below that the first round of concepts were simple rectangles on a page (no measurements) for that reason.
There were four concepts altogether. Above, you’ll see two and below, two more. I was told to design in gold and silver and I ended up using red for the Mrs. Fields logo.
Fields ended up choosing concept number three and supplied me with a dieline upon making that choice. Below, the final mechanical for this package:
And here is the final product! I think it turned out looking great, and hopefully this dieline is one that their team will keep using in the future, because the twisty-twisty is so fun! If you haven’t yet peeked the
portfolio highlight for this project, check that out to see a bunch of other holiday boxes in a very pretty red. :)
