Peek the Process: Mrs. Fields Valentine’s Day Packages
Behind-the-Scenes | Mrs. Fields
Valentines! I thought it would be great to feature a behind-the-scenes look at a few versions of the vector illustrations I created for the Mrs. Fields Valentine’s Day packages I worked on. If you haven’t already seen the
portfolio highlight of this project, take a look to peek the mechanicals that were sent to the printer.
Originally, Fields wanted a ladybug and an owl box but I created a bee illustration that they loved and so we went with that design in lieu of a ladybug. These were definitely a challenge, in the sense that my cartoon/illustration skills are (almoooost) passable but nothing spectacular, as is clearly evidenced below:
Luckily, my vector skills in Illustrator are a little better. I had an idea of what I was shooting for, so I set to work in creating a vector from my drawing. Had I created something a little more detailed and proportionate on paper, I would likely have scanned my drawing and traced it in Illustrator, but quick sketches are quick for a reason. ;) It’s hard to see in the first bee on the left, but all the design elements are made up of tiny hearts. I presented two versions of the bee’s face, with some variety of design on each.
I followed the same process for the owls, creating two different faces with a variety of design elements applied to each. Initially, I was limited to three Pantone colors: pink, red and gold, but in the process of creating both an owl and a bee (an entirely different color altogether), orange and yellow were added into the mix.

And here is the final product! I’m very happy with these way these both came out, printed. I wish I actually had the boxes in-hand to take a better look at; for instance, it would be nice to see how my patterns along the inside portion of the box turned out. You can’t see it here, because it’s only visible once the lid is lifted, but if you look at the mechanical, you’ll see the polka dot and heart patterns I’m referring to. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this behind-the-scenes peek! I have a few other projects I’ll update here on the blog to let you peek the process as well. Keep a look out. :)
