In 2012, the culinary department and digital design department at Food Network collided and the result was Food Network Favorites, a subscription-based series of single-topic digital cookbooks for purchase through Apple’s Newsstand. Originally intended to become a bimonthly series, Food Network Favorites is ultimately comprised of a series of three cookbook topics: Super Soups, Smart Cookies! and One-Pot Wonders. The project was moved out of Newsstand, and published as individual apps in its later phase.
Food Network Favorites as a project-whole, is one of my most-proud moments in design. I was involved in each of these apps from beginning to end: moodboarding, creating a look-and-feel, designing, designing components of the interface, building interactions, marketing, helping the art director prepare for photoshoots, creating the app icons. I had a lot of fun with this one, and rocked it with an awesome team.
Super Soups is an app that features classic, traditional soup recipes as well as a few new twists on old favorites. What follows below are a couple of screens I pitched with design concepts for chapter openers and recipe pages, and beneath that, screens of the live app.
